From Vision to Reality: Celebrating a Biotech Milestone Against the backdrop of a beautiful warm February evening, the ceremonial ribbon was cut as applause and excitement filled the air at North Fork, UVA’s Discovery Park. On February 25th, the Commonwealth BioAccelerator officially opened its doors, transforming 6,500 square feet of cutting-edge lab space into a launchpad for Virginia’s most promising biotech ventures. Industry pioneers, academic partners, government officials, and community supporters gathered to witness this turning point in Charlottesville’s innovation landscape. The event marked not just the opening of a new facility, but as CvilleBioHub Executive Director Nikki Hastings described it, “the start of a new identity for CvilleBioHub and a bold new chapter for life sciences innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth and vitality in Virginia.” Key Leaders Rally to Celebrate Biotech Milestone The launch celebration brought energy and momentum to North Fork as academic, government, industry, and community champions gathered to mark this inflection point for Virginia’s biotech future. Deputy Secretary Segura, Emily Kilroy, Dr. Kent, and representatives from the Manning Family Foundation joined biotech innovators and startup founders in what Hastings described as a “beautiful, warm night to celebrate the launch of something truly transformational.” “Tonight is more than just celebrating the opening of a new lab space,” Hastings told the assembled guests at the launch event, highlighting the broader significance of the moment. The warm evening provided the perfect backdrop for commemorating what Hastings called “something truly transformational.” The Most Collaborative Project in Our Community The Commonwealth BioAccelerator emerged from CvilleBioHub’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the regional biotech ecosystem. What began in 2016 as a grassroots initiative has evolved into a powerhouse organization tackling its “greatest challenge” yet. “This is the most collaborative project our community has ever seen,” Hastings emphasized, before acknowledging the extensive coalition of partners that made the accelerator possible through the three-year project:

The total project funding exceeds $7.5 million with contributions from all these partners, demonstrating unprecedented collaboration. Ready to Launch: Six Companies Already Onboard Perhaps most exciting is that the Commonwealth BioAccelerator isn’t just a promise for the future—it’s already operational with its first cohort of companies. “We are READY TO GO!” Hastings announced, revealing that six companies have already been selected:

GenEp – UVA spin-out developing therapeutics for rare genetic epilepsy disorders
Vasarya – A pulmonary fibrosis startup
Verified Biosystems – Provider of high-quality productized lentivirus for pharma
Avant Genomics – Developing liquid biopsy for early cancer detection
SNC Therapeutics – Creating gene therapy for Type 1 Diabetes
SonoFx – Producing voice restoration medical devices

These pioneering companies will benefit from 12-24 months of occupancy, access to state-of-the-art lab space and equipment, dedicated mentorship, specialized programming, and a supportive community of industry experts. Addressing Critical Challenges in Biotech The Commonwealth BioAccelerator directly responds to fundamental challenges facing the biotech industry. “It takes 10 years and $2B to bring a new drug to market,” Hastings noted, highlighting the arduous process for developing medical innovations. The accelerator aims to overcome two critical regional challenges: “How do we take these discoveries from the research bench to the people who need them most? AND How can our emerging biotech scene participate on a national level?” By providing essential infrastructure and support, the facility will help startups navigate the complex journey from discovery to market. As Mike Lenox, Special Adviser to the Provost on Entrepreneurship, has emphasized, the Commonwealth BioAccelerator represents “a critical addition to our entrepreneurial ecosystem.” A Foundation Built on Community Support The successful launch of the Commonwealth BioAccelerator represents the power of collective effort and shared vision.
