Virginia Biotech Shines:  CvilleBioHub Celebrates Breakthrough Week with BioDiscovery Summit and BioSpark Winners

Charlottesville, VA — This week marked a milestone moment for Virginia’s life sciences ecosystem, with CvilleBioHub at the center of an extraordinary convergence of innovation, leadership, and investment.

On Wednesday, September 17, CvilleBioHub Executive Director Nikki Hastings joined leaders at the 10th Annual Women Building Bio event, hosted by Virginia Bio, celebrating the role of women driving one of the nation’s fastest-growing biotech regions.

On Thursday, September 18, CvilleBioHub hosted its 4th Annual BioDiscovery Summit, drawing entrepreneurs, scientists, and investors to Charlottesville for a day of knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and celebration of biotech innovation.

A highlight of the Summit was the BioSpark Pitch Competition, where eight emerging companies showcased breakthroughs poised to transform the future of healthcare and biotechnology.

CvilleBioHub is proud to announce this year’s winners:

  • $10,000 Award: Tim Showalter and Overa Therapeutics
  • $5,000 Award: Julia Halterman, PhD and SalivIQ Diagnostics, Inc.
  • CvilleBioHub Accelerator Access (1 year): Revanth Damerla and Stride Robotics

“These founders are pushing the boundaries of science and entrepreneurship,” said Nikki Hastings, Executive Director of CvilleBioHub. “BioSpark is about fueling bold ideas, and this year’s winners exemplify the creativity and determination that will propel Virginia biotech forward.”

The Summit also featured high-level discussions on the future of drug discovery and biotech leadership. In partnership with Cooley, experts participated in the panel “Translational Leadership – Building Companies that Bridge Science and Market”, exploring how scientific breakthroughs are being translated into real-world therapies, the trends shaping drug development from early innovation to market launch, and how leadership strategies and regional strengths are fueling Virginia’s rise in biotech.

The evening continued with a keynote conversation featuring Dr. Mark T. Esser, Chief Scientific Officer and Head of the Manning Institute of Biotechnology, moderated by Bryan Manning, Founder & CEO of Clinical Enrollment. Esser reflected on his career path, pivotal experiences that shaped his approach to biotech innovation, and the vision behind the newly established Manning Institute. He highlighted the Institute’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge areas of science and technology, fostering the next generation of biotech leaders, and building meaningful partnerships with industry, academia, startups, and healthcare systems.

Esser also underscored the Institute’s intent to strengthen ties with the Charlottesville biotech community, creating opportunities for local startups to collaborate and benefit from its many resources like those delivered by CvilleBioHub. Looking ahead, he described success for the Institute as accelerating discoveries into market-ready therapies, training leaders who can bridge science and entrepreneurship, and positioning Virginia as a recognized national hub for biotechnology.

Adding to the momentum, global pharmaceutical leader Eli Lilly announced a $5 billion advanced manufacturing facility in Goochland County, VA, creating hundreds of industry jobs and underscoring Virginia’s role as a national hub for biotech and life sciences.

“This week was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when entrepreneurs, scientists, investors, and industry leaders come together with urgency and purpose,” Hastings added. “CvilleBioHub is proud of our role in helping catalyze the ecosystem and accelerate the growth of companies shaping the future of healthcare.”
