Luna Innovations is seeking a Data Scientist supporting our Biotech Team to perform research tasks and support new technology development in the area of data science for embedded sensing and biophysics applications. It is desired for the candidate to have background in wearable devices and how data can be acquired, processed, and analyzed using embedded hardware.

The position will involve algorithm development, using simulated data as well as measurements collected from physiologic systems. The position will involve signal conditioning and processing to obtain information about a patient’s health and their environment, or to provide guidance on human performance. The position will also support hardware development and testing on laboratory and field equipment.

The successful candidate will need to continue developing skills in sensors, and data acquisition; and contribute to the development and refinement of technologies, test methods and experimental system design and operation. The position will support development teams focused on biomedical and related health sciences applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • For data from physiologic systems using embedded sensors and data acquisition hardware:
  • Design the data flow
  • Data capture
  • ETL
  • Fusion with data from other sensors and sources (medical imaging, physiological sensors, and medical devices)
  • Storage
  • Analyze and visualize the Data
  • Use Supervised and Unsupervised Machine Learning models
  • Identify features most relevant to patient health and human performance
  • Develop diagnostic and prognostic algorithms to determine the physiologic state of a person for clinical health or human performance insight
  • Collaborate with colleagues across mechanical, electrical, biomedical, and data analytics fields
  • Independently and accurately execute designed experiments to demonstrate, validate, and verify measurement system and algorithm performance
  • Perform problem-solving tasks associated with experimental methods and test system operation
  • Record, store and summarize information on procedures and results in a written format
  • Set up, adjust, operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments
  • Expand job specific knowledge through training, on-the-job learning, and technical publications
  • Promote a clean and safe work environment
  • Complete work within stated schedule to meet reporting and hardware deliverable deadlines

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, systems or related engineering field with 3+ years of data analytics experience in research and development, or
  • Master’s degree in data science, biomedical, mechanical, electrical, systems or related engineering / applied science field
  • Experience with data acquisition systems and software
  • Experience analyzing data from multiple sensors and fusing together to generate health assessments for current and future states of a patient
  • Demonstrated ability to support multiple and disparate project tasks in parallel
  • Competency in Microsoft Office software, including Word and Excel
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and problem solving skills
  • Beneficial Experience
  • Physical sensing including electrical, electromechanical, and electromagnetic transducers
  • Data processing and signal analysis using Python, R, or MATLAB
  • Statistical analysis
  • Experience with cloud computing resources such as AWS
  • Web development experience
  • Programming embedded microcontrollers (e.g. C, C++, Java)
  • SQL and NoSQL Databases,
  • Qt (PyQt), Plotly Dash, MongoDB, Pandas / NumPy / SciPy / scikit-learn, Jupyter Notebooks
  • Mechanical design tools – (e.g., SolidWorks)
  • Electronics design tools- (e.g., Altium)
  • Due to government contracting regulations, U.S. Citizenship or Permanent resident status is a firm requirement
