The Head of Medicinal Chemistry will be responsible for leading an interdisciplinary team of scientists focused on the discovery of novel drug candidates in the rare disease therapy area. The role requires a thorough command of the drug discovery process from disease selection through clinical candidate declaration as well as experience in the transition of drug candidates into clinical development. Strong leadership behaviors will be important as this role will involve leading matrix program teams as well as line management and mentoring teams in career development. The individual should have strong organizational skills and be adept at finding creative solutions to challenging problems. This role will report to the Head of Discovery and will be a member of the Discovery Research Leadership Team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Department of Medicinal Chemistry
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and execution of drug discovery strategies
  • Work closely with the R&D Leadership Team to drive the discovery portfolio progression
  • Establish partnering strategies to leverage external knowledge and capabilities and effectively plan resource allocation to achieve team goals
  • Provide strategic, scientific, and managerial leadership across all disciplines in an outsourced Medicinal Chemistry environment
  • Provide timely and well-organized reports to leadership team forums
  • Collaborate effectively with other discovery leaders and with the Leadership Team

Experience and Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (PhD) or equivalent in Synthetic Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry
  • 15+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry with a strong track record of scientific innovation, project leadership, delivery of clinical candidates, and INDs
  • In-depth knowledge of the entire drug R&D processes and expertise in ADME/PK, pharmacology, CMC, formulations, and computational chemistry
  • A natural leader with effective organizational, interpersonal, communication, and managerial skills who is able to motivate and inspire others
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency, scientific creativity, independent thought, and ability to effectively collaborate with others
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required, as is the desire and ability to excel in a multidisciplinary environment as an integral leader and member across multiple project teams
  • Ability to foster positive working relationships across the organization, with functional leads, program leads, and senior leadership
