The UVA Hub Coordinator will support the day-to-day and long-term management, implementation, evaluation and growth of core programming, managing all day-to-day operations of the UVA Innovation Hub, including coordination with the Mid-South Innovation Hub. This person will aid with cohort recruitment, management of training logistics, facilitation of workshops and organizing information for reporting in support of the Hub.

The UVA Hub Coordinator will report to the UVA Hub Director and work closely with all senior personnel and the UVA Hub Leadership Team. The UVA Hub Coordinator will also help develop and coordinate partnerships and collaborations with other Mid-South Hub Partners and other internal- and external-Hub collaborators including, but not limited to, the investor community, entrepreneurship centers and connected resources, as well as industry partners.

The broader impact/commercial potential of the Mid-South I-Corps Hubs is the development of a sustainable inclusive innovation ecosystem that will impart shared economic prosperity across the Mid-South region of the United States. The Mid-South Hub’s unique, formative, evidence-driven approach will inform how inclusive innovation ecosystems can be established in regions with primordial economic activity. This knowledge will augment team preparation, maximizing the value extracted from I-Corps training. The Hub will further amplify the downstream successes and sustainability of deep technology ventures, including grant acquisition, fundraising, sustainable revenues and net-positive liquidity events.

UVA is a comprehensive public research university located in Charlottesville, Virginia. Home to 12 schools, UVA is consistently rated among the top public universities and university “best values” in the U.S. During the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2022, the University reported $652MM in research expenditures.

The Mid-South I-Corps Hub is led by Vanderbilt University with an intentional emphasis on inclusive innovation. This hub will accelerate the translation of groundbreaking university research outcomes into commercialized ventures that seed emergent, prosperous innovation ecosystems across the Mid-South. The Mid-South I-Corps Hub spans across four states, and is composed of Vanderbilt University (VU), George Mason University (GMU), University of Tennessee Knoxville (UT), University of Kentucky (UK), Jackson State University (JSU), University of Louisville (UL), Meharry Medical College (MMC), Tennessee State University (TSU) and the University of Virginia (UVA).

The UVA Licensing & Ventures Group (LVG) manages intellectual property and technology commercialization for UVA’s research portfolio. In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022, LVG solicited and/or received 226 invention disclosures from UVA faculty, staff and students; executed 85 commercial transactions; prosecuted to the issuance of 53 U.S. patents; launched five new ventures; and invested $1.2MM from the LVG Seed Fund.

Key Responsibilities

The UVA Hub Coordinator for the UVA Innovation Hub performs a variety of complex duties, ensuring the success of the UVA I-Corps Hub and the Mid-South Innovation Hub generally. Responsibilities include:

Hub Coordination

  • Manage all day-to-day operations of the UVA Hub as directed by the UVA Hub Director
  • Lead coordination with Hub Coordinator activities with and between the Partner Coordinators in the Mid-South Hub
  • Assist UVA New Venture Group leadership with cohort recruitment
  • Lead coordination and event planning/management for UVA Hub events
  • Manage facilitation of instructional workshops and National/Regional cohort training logistics
  • Organize information and data as directed for reporting
  • Assist in the management of the UVA LVG Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIRs)
  • Assist in reviewing and researching relevant NSF National Innovation Network (NIN) I-Corps programs to use as inspiration to formulate an approach for the Mid-South Hub’s program.
  • Assist instructors, if needed, for any of the UVA entrepreneurship programs
  • Assist in the coordination of future collaborations or alliances that involve internal- and/or external-Hub organizations, community partners, and mentors.
  • Support and co-promote events and activities with current and future Hub Partners or alliance organizations.
  • Assist with the co-creation of UVA Hub training materials or website content as needed.
  • Ensure that activities in these areas align with the mission of the Mid-South Hub
  • Communicate respectfully with program participants and community partners.
  • Project a welcoming attitude that ensures participants feel invited and supported as they engage in UVA Hub programming.

Partnerships, Collaborations, and Strategic Outreach

  • Coordinate and manage the design and production of promotional materials on an as-needed basis to create awareness about specific workshops, programs and events, and motivate participation.
  • Work with UVA Hub Leadership, Hub Partners and alliance colleagues to develop articles, blog posts, etc. to promote the Mid-South Hub and the creative activities its participants and colleagues undertake.
  • Assist in the creation, onboarding and training of an inclusive network of mentors who help advance the mission of UVA LVG.
  • Assist in the identification and recruitment of strategic internal- and external-Hub partners and alliance colleagues.

Organizational Support

  • Oversee UVA Hub and UVA LVG-related events and events held by the Mid-South Hub by third parties as needed, including but not limited to, speaker series, seminars, workshops and competitions.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and strategic planning sessions.
  • Assist other team members, both of the Mid-South Hub and the UVA LVG, and work on other projects on an as-needed basis.

Experience and Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary.
  • A Master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education is strongly preferred.
  • Experience as an entrepreneur and/or assisting in entrepreneurship programs or centers is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with and experience in the nonprofit, social sector, academia or entrepreneurial fields strongly preferred.
  • Experience facilitating workshops and events is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with systems thinking, and/or leading innovation or entrepreneurial programming is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with I-Corps and Tech Transfer at institutions of higher education.
  • Experience successfully supporting partnerships and collaborations with minimal oversight.
  • Extremely well organized with excellent time management skills and the ability to successfully handle multiple programs at once.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to interact fluidly with the many different stakeholders that will contact and work with the UVA Hub and UVA LVG.
  • Experience with design thinking, business proposal and entrepreneurship case studies
  • Flexible with job expectations and schedule in an office that is on the cutting edge of innovation.

$75K-85K, commensurate with experience.
