The Performance Systems and Analytics group of Luna Labs is seeking a Corrosion and Coatings Testing Researcher to help us solve material reliability problems for our customers in the defense, aerospace, and automotive industries.  As a researcher, the successful candidate will apply their classroom training and technical knowledge as part of a multidisciplinary research and development team focused on advancing sensor technology and predictive modeling for real-time monitoring of coating degradation, corrosion, and environment assisted cracking.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support experimental efforts in the field of materials science and corrosion and perform environment assisted cracking, coating evaluations, and electrochemical tests.
  • Perform analysis of experimental data using engineering software packages (e.g., OriginPro, MATLAB, Python) to improve our understanding of corrosion and materials degradation processes.
  • Expand job specific knowledge through training, on-the-job learning, and scientific study.
  • Promote a clean and safe lab environment.

Experience and Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Associate degree in science, engineering, or a related field.
  • Coursework or familiarity with materials science or chemistry.
  • Ability to analyze data and draw conclusions from results.

Beneficial Skills and Experience:

  • BS in STEM field.
  • Knowledge of one or more of the following research areas:   corrosion processes and testing, coatings evaluation, electrochemistry, microscopy, aerospace and automotive alloys, environment assisted cracking.
  • Previous laboratory experience.
  • Understanding of basic electrical circuits.
  • Photography.
  • Ability to prototype and/or improvise solutions (making, DIY, tinkering, etc.).
