Entrepreneur-in-Residence

Nikki Hastings has more than 15 years of experience supporting early stage biotech/medtech and medical device companies, specifically with expertise in working with academic and first-time founders. She has executive and entrepreneur leadership experience in companies including HemoShear Therapeutics, Contraline, and Cerillo within the CvilleBioHub region. She is a co-founder of CvilleBioHub and the organization’s first executive director. She is currently general partner of QDS Capital, an early stage venture firm that invests in founders with high growth potential technologies. Nikki holds a PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Virginia and participates on the UVA Ivy Review Board and UVA Engineering Entrepreneurship Advisory Board.

Entrepreneur-in-Residence

Bill Porter came to Charlottesville in the Fall of 2019 after spending the previous 20+ years in Silicon Valley, where he spent his career working with and scaling startups across the tech industry. After beginning his career as an attorney at Cooley, he moved over to the business side and held a number of operational roles, most recently as COO of ThousandEyes (acquired by Cisco), a Sequoia-backed networking SaaS company. Since moving to Charlottesville, Bill continues to advise and invest in early stage startups across the high tech and medical industries.  Bill also sits on the Board of CAV Angels, an early stage investment group focused on mentoring and funding growth companies from the UVA ecosystem. In his spare time, he enjoys golf and working with Lab Rescue of Richmond and his 3 labs.

Entrepreneur-in-Residence

Paul Sartori, PhD, MBA is CvilleBioHub’s first Entrepreneur-In-Residence. Dr. Sartori has served as a senior executive and advisor for nearly 30 years in a variety of challenging global roles for large corporations as well as start-ups and developing firms, notably, Cavion, as VP of Organization and Strategy until 2019. Paul earned his BA with Honors from Northeastern University, and earned a MA in Teaching History, and a PhD in Education from the University of Virginia.  In his EIR role, Paul works with early and growth stage companies to offer executive level support and advising for fundraising, strategy, talent and operations.

Grant Writing Support

Willie McPheat, PhD, MBA is a highly experienced pharma industry project leader and scientist who is retired from AstraZeneca after 25 years experience in the UK and Sweden as Drug Discovery Project Leader, Principal Scientist and Line Manager.  Based in Norfolk, VA, Dr. McPheat has over a decade of close ties with UVA and Charlottesville through co-founding/co-leading the UVA-AstraZeneca collaboration and as Review Board member of UVA intramural research commercialization funds and advising local start-up businesses. He holds a PhD in microbiology (bacterial vaccines) and has researched in areas as diverse as host defense vs infection and cardiovascular diseases. Dr. McPheat is available for a variety of consultancy support roles including business and drug discovery strategy, commercialization plans, grant writing/review, team building.
